Open letter to Ed Miliband on settlement trade
Signatures:
Dear Secretary of State,
We are writing to demand urgent and substantial UK Government action to hold Israel to account for its war crimes and to bring an end to its apartheid and genocide of Palestinians.
Stopping Britain’s complicity in the devastation and destruction across the Middle East must be a priority for this Government. We are pleased to see reports that the Government is poised to introduce “robust” new sanctions on Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
However, we are concerned by reports that Trump’s US is now pressuring the UK not to act.
The government must follow through, taking all action necessary to meet its obligations under international law. This means:
- Immediately halting all arms sales to Israel
- Suspending our trade agreement with Israel
- Implementing a comprehensive ban on goods and services from illegal settlements
- Upholding the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court
The UK must work with international partners to deliver real justice and accountability for the Palestinian people, take all measures within our power to end Israel’s illegal occupation, and work to deliver freedom, self-determination and equality for Palestinians.
Countries like Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands have moved to ban settlement goods, and the UK should do the same and support others to adopt this position.
No matter the outcome of the upcoming Israeli elections, the British public want to see UK foreign and trade policy uphold human rights and be conducted in line with British values.
We do not want to be complicit in these crimes perpetrated by the Israeli government, with the support of the United States and President Trump, and want to see a substantive change in our approach to international cooperation.
