Sign the letter: The BBC must not pay Trump a penny

Dear Chair,

Donald Trump is suing the BBC for a reported $10 billion. This is his latest attack on media freedom, after lawsuits against a wide range of US newspapers and TV channels.

However, he is suing in a Florida court – and the episode of Panorama that the case is about was never shown in the US, and not even available online there. Even if he wins the case, the UK-based BBC could ignore it.

The BBC is not guilty of ‘anti-Trump bias’ – but, despite Panorama’s editing error, Trump is guilty of inciting his supporters’ attack on the US Capitol on January 6th 2021.

The only way that the BBC can end up giving Trump a payout is if it decides to pay, to appease Trump and make this issue go away. There may even be political pressure from the British government to do this as it tries to renegotiate the collapsing US-UK trade deal.

We call on you to stand firm and to not hand so much as one penny from the BBC to Donald Trump.
