Press release: Response to Starmer confirming Trump visit

Starmer’s “hopes” for Trump state visit show Britain’s complicity in supporting authoritarian rule and appeasement of Trump’s agenda

Responding to Keir Starmer confirming Trump’s state visit will go ahead, and that he “hopes” it will be this year, Stop Trump spokesperson Zoe Gardner said:

“We will meet any Trump visit with massive protests and mobilisation on the streets, in our work places, schools and communities.

“There must be no business-as-usual with the US under the authoritarian rule of Trump.

“It is horrific to repeat this invitation at a time when Trump is destabilising the world by backing Israel’s bombing of Iran, the ongoing genocide in Gaza – no longer live-streamed due to the full internet blackout in Gaza – and the massive rise in Israeli military and armed settler attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.

“On top of this, the Trump administration is crushing dissent across the US, using militarised force, in the largest authoritarian crackdown and abuse of executive power the country has seen in decades.

“Britain must not appease a US president waging war at home against immigrants and refugees and working class communities, all the while supporting and aiding Israel’s war crimes and genocide against the Palestinan people and increasing numbers of political prisoners in the US standing up to Trump, including Mahmoud Khalil.

“Starmer may want to celebrate Trump but the British people are contacting us in huge numbers, pledging to join the protests and are united in their outrage at this state visit.”

Ends.
