Say No to Trump on North Sea oil

I am writing to you as a constituent to urge you to demand that the government upholds commitments to our climate security and does not approve any further drilling in the North Sea for oil and gas.

I am deeply concerned about this decision being taken as a political move to appease President Trump – who has taken millions from fossil fuel companies – rather than following the evidence and views of leading climate scientists and economists.

We need bold action to support workers through a just transition that rapidly expands renewable energy in the UK. We are facing more heatwaves and wildfires and making this decision now, when we should be doing much more to transition away from fossil fuels, is shocking to me.

Opening up the North Sea to more oil and gas drilling, including so-called tie-backs, will make super rich oil companies even richer whilst we pay the cost – in tax reliefs to these oil giants and in the acceleration of climate collapse.

I look forward to hearing from you about your stance on this issue and any action you are taking to prevent further drilling for oil and gas in the North Sea. Thank you.
